Our municipality was designated as a Sports Tourist Destination by the Generalitat de Catalunya in 2003.
The brand of Tourist and Sporting Destination of quality is included in the master plan of Tourism of Catalonia that tries to define a model that serves for the tourist development of certain areas related to the practice of sport activities.
The Sports Tourism Destination brand is a seal granted by Tourism of Catalonia that recognises those municipalities that distinguish themselves by offering high quality resources to receive tourism with sporting interests.
The growing tourist demand for complementary alternatives to the sun and the beach means that Tourism of Catalonia is committed to promoting sport as an economic agent and a driving force in our regions, specifically in Empuriabrava as a Pilot Municipality.
The recognition that Tourism of Catalonia grants to the municipality of Castelló d'Empúries as a sports destination is not due to the will to promote a brand, but to a whole sports tradition, tourist infrastructures, sports and complementary facilities and, above all, to the will of the municipality and the people involved in the local development so that sport provides new tools for promotion, growth and optimisation of the municipality's resources.
This certification has been granted for the sports modalities of skydiving and football, two sports with deep local roots and with a history that shows that they have gone beyond the simple practice of sport and have become a local energizer and a resource for the future in the tourist projection of the municipality.
But the sports tradition and the local resources go beyond these two sports modalities, since Empuriabrava is a leader in nautical sports activities such as cruising, light sailing, deep-sea fishing and jet skiing, thanks to the magnificent facilities we have in the Marina of Empuriabrava and the natural resources offered by our beaches.
