In a surprising move for innovative tourism, Empuriabrava has announced the creation of Europe's first underground water park, located right beneath its iconic canals. The project, named "AquaSub Empuria," will allow visitors to enjoy slides, rapids, and themed pools while exploring underwater tunnels.
According to the official statement, construction will begin in January 2025, utilizing an old gallery system that once connected the canals to the port. Among the highlights will be the "Canal Loop," a transparent slide that follows the path of a real canal, letting users feel like they are swimming alongside boats.
The park will also feature virtual reality zones where visitors can "dive" into underwater adventures without getting wet, restaurants with underwater views, and a wave pool beneath the town center.
"We want to offer a unique experience that combines our heritage with aquatic fun. AquaSub Empuria will be an unmatched attraction on the Costa Brava," said the tourism councilor.
However, the news has not been without controversy. Some residents have expressed concerns about the impact of the construction on boat traffic and the canal ecosystem. Nevertheless, authorities assure that the park will be 100% sustainable and will include state-of-the-art filtration systems to protect the environment.
The opening is planned for the summer of 2026, though conceptual images have already been released, generating much excitement on social media.
